Celebrating the Last Day of School

Yay! The last day of the school year is finally here and I'm ready to enjoy the summer holidays! I'll miss my students but I do love having some time to recharge and work on my writing. My writing goals for the summer:

1) Finish revisions on Novel #4

2) Finish rewriting Novel #3

I know it seems like I'm always rewriting, but I think I'm finally starting to "get" how much revision is really required to write a good book. For me, it takes several painstakingly slow revisions where I think about practically every word to layer in more story and character. Hopefully, these will go faster now that I have more time for writing.

3) Start a new book - I have so many ideas, I can hardly wait for this one!

My notebook is full of story beginnings or ideas I've jotted down for when I have time. This summer, I'd like to take one or two of these and see where they go.

What are your writing plans for the summer?

In case you're interested, over at MiG Writers, I'm posting today on The Challenges of Making Characters Come Alive.

  1. Awesome that you're done with school. I'd love to have the summer off.

Yes, writing is a lot of revision. I'm going to be revising my first book for the zillionth time and continue working on my new project.

  2. For sure, I'll be finishing a first draft.

And yay! for the last day of school. When I was a kid that was the best day. Oh, what am I saying? When I was a *teacher,* that was still the best day. (In a bittersweet way, of course.)

    1. I've had an amazing year with my class, and I'm sad to see this group move on, but happy for them too, because I know they are ready. But I am so excited to have more writing time!

  3. Yay for having some time off to write! Revising rewriting and new words. Sounds like a good plan for your summer break. I'll just be over here working on this rewrite - which I hope to have done by the end of July (including tweaks if necessary). If I can get it polished and ready, I'll start working on query materials and submitting in August. =o)

    1. Good luck with your summer goals! I expect to be doing some querying too, once I'm happy with my revisions and rewrites.

  5. I'm planning to become an outlining expert. My goal is to outline my rewrite of novel #2 and then outline 3 more ideas for new novels. Based on the outlines, I'll choose the next novel to work on. And hopefully I'll have comments back at the end of the summer on a full read of novel #3, and I'll be revising that and then submitting queries.

  7. Wow, school all through June? When do you start back?

My granddaughters go back on July 30!!! But what they really have is a modified year-round schedule.

Good luck on all your writing goals!
