Friday Fun: Unusual Locations for Writing

I actually have worked on my writing on the subway, but I've never taken a workshop on one!

Subway Car Is a Writers’ Workshop on the Way to Queens and Back

Local editor and creative writing instructor Brian Henry sometimes holds writing workshops at The World's Biggest Bookstore in Toronto, but I haven't been to one there yet.

This makes me think about places where I've worked on my writing projects:

  • in my writing room at the computer
  • on the living room sofa while watching mindless television
  • at the side of the pool waiting/watching kids swimming
  • in the backyard or on the front porch
  • in waiting rooms
  • in a car (as a passenger)
  • up in a big tree (when I was a preteen)
  • sitting on a dock
  • at an outlet mall
  • at a rowing regatta
  • in a library
  • in a hotel at Whistler

Where's the craziest location you've ever attending a writing workshop or done any writing?

  1. You're certainly maximizing writing time. Great ideas. Sorry I don't have any crazy writing places. I usually write in my sunroom or standing up at the kitchen counter because I sit way too much.

    1. Yeah, I sit way more than I should! A sunroom sounds like a lovely place for writing!

  2. I'm like Natalie. No crazy places for me. I'm easily distracted so I can only write in a room without distractions. Or without many distractions. Some of my friends get together to write in a cafe. Not me.

    1. I hate distractions too. When I'm waiting somewhere, I try to find a place to sit that's kind of off to myself.

  3. I can't write anywhere but home, but I do watch and listen to everyone and everything when I'm out and about--always gathering ideas...

  4. Ha, that's an interesting place for a workshop.

I remember a couple of years ago I donated all the furniture in my house except my bed and I got TONS of writing done there -- go figure. :)

    1. Wow, comfy! And I guess it would be faster to clean your house too!

  6. Wow, I guess I haven't experienced many crazy places. I'm normally in my office. Occasionally I'm in an armchair, or a waiting room.
