Brooke, ...Thanks everyone for your kind comments!

Brooke, I've seen my daughter drop a book at the beginning, the middle or any point when she gets bored (never a Harry Potter book). Thanks for your link!

Girl Friday, a little mystery with carefully placed clues is a great way to keep curiosity active, even if the book is not a mystery.Andrea Mackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15250681746122381149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012878468524630950.post-43340226323494741012011-02-24T01:59:02.920-05:002011-02-24T01:59:02.920-05:00Great post and thanks for the links. You're so...Great post and thanks for the links. You're so right about curiosity. In fact I think you've inspired me to blog about this too!

I just read City of Ember, and I think the use of the half-readable secret Instructions letter was a brilliant way to get kids involved and reading on, because they're trying to figure out what it says and what it means. Well-done clues that a young reader can follow are a great way to keep their interest.Tatum Flynnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00074228011847976820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012878468524630950.post-2047349257374051152011-02-24T00:16:35.101-05:002011-02-24T00:16:35.101-05:00I think starting with action is critical for MG. M...I think starting with action is critical for MG. My daughter just stopped reading the 2nd book of The Series of Unfortunate Events because it became snoresville to her after a couple of chapters. The hook definitely needs to pull the reader through the story not just through the first few pages.

Mary Kole has a fabulous post about making sure you have some context (stimulus) before getting into the heat of the action (reaction).

http://kidlit.com/2010/06/21/stimulus-first-then-reaction/bfavhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14164661338051897220noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2012878468524630950.post-51962828131416202332011-02-23T15:35:35.935-05:002011-02-23T15:35:35.935-05:00Oooh thanks for posting all that great linkage! :)...Oooh thanks for posting all that great linkage! :)

Hooks are very important, especially in MG. I love putting my characters right into the action and taking the reader along the ride.
